Today I am sharing with you my Book Club Reporter book review of the mystery-thriller novel:  The New Wife, written by author, Sue Watson, and it is an engrossing and challenging murder-mystery set in a small town where nothing bad ever happens … that is, until now!

 00:36

Okay, don’t go away because The New Wife is an awesome thriller and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

Okay, now…about The New Wife. As I mentioned earlier, this murder-mystery thriller novel takes place in a small town where it seems like nothing bad ever happens. Single mom, Georgie, and her grown-up son, Sam, live in a peaceful town where anything exciting and/or untoward almost never disturbs the peace of the townspeople.

Georgie spends a lot of time hanging out with her friends, who are also the parents of Lauren, the young woman who recently married Sam and became Georgie’s her daughter-in-law.

On the surface, this group of friends and their children appear to have developed strong friendships over the years. Now that Sam and Lauren have married, the in-law family friendships have naturally grown even closer. But not everything is as tranquil as it seems and that becomes very clear when the new wife is discovered dead.

Now, before I tell you more from my book review, I would like to first, go over the publisher’s book description of The New Wife. The publisher’s book description is the first thing most of us read when we decide whether or not to purchase and read a book. I will save you the trouble by providing you with the book description now.

 Publisher Book Description

You can never truly know what goes on behind closed doors… My darling son, Sam, is marrying his childhood sweetheart and I couldn’t be prouder of the man he’s grown into. Walking out on his abusive father all those years ago was the best thing I ever did. And today he stands, tall and handsome, saying ‘I do’ to my dream daughter-in-law. If I hadn’t pushed them together all those years ago, he might never have found a girl as perfect as Lauren. It’s true what they say, mother always knows best.

But weeks later, Lauren is dead and police cars fill the driveway of their idyllic countryside home. As they question Sam, I sense he’s hiding something. Why won’t he look me in the eye? And who does he rush off to meet as soon as the police are gone?

Desperate, I do what every good mother would do. I let myself into Sam and Lauren’s bedroom. What I see, I will never be able to forget. My son’s beautiful new wife was hiding a dangerous secret. Can I clear my son’s name? And could my life be in danger now too?

Okay, the publisher description also includes this early book blurb describing The New Wife as:

“A completely gripping, utterly twisted thriller that will leave your jaw on the floor. Perfect for fans of Gone Girl, The Wife Between Us and The Woman in the Window.”

 Book Review

Okay, here we go with my book review of: The New Wife

So what exactly happened to Lauren? Was she victim of a freak accident? Or was she murdered? Now, as far as those friendships I mentioned earlier, all bets are off.

Sam is now considered a suspect of the murder of his new wife. As Sam maintains his innocence, Georgie frantically sets out to prove her beloved son’s innocence. Georgie soon realizes those she relies upon most may not be as trustworthy as she thought. And they might actually believe her son might have murdered his new wife.

I completely relished reading The New Wife! This mystery-thriller novel about a newly wedded young man, Sam, and his mother, Georgie, brings readers a thrilling murder mystery suspense story.

Author Sue Watson’s brings us well-drawn and fascinating characters. Lies among them seem to know no bounds. Their motivations are complicated and not necessarily easy to understand. And that makes the mystery of Lauren’s death more difficult to solve.

The dysfunctional personalities and relationships among the key players in this story, make for an intriguing and gripping page-turner. The New Wife was an enjoyable read for me. I loved having to work hard to try to solve the mystery. And I look forward to reading more from the author, Sue Watson.
